Class 1 - Explosives

Class 1 – Explosives

Explosives are products that can ignite or detonate due to a chemical reaction. In Australia, explosives are classified into six Divisions according to their danger level. Business owners managing explosives must be aware of regulations for safe transportation and storage.

Class One Explosives can be dangerous if not handled correctly.

The six divisions of Class One Explosives are:

Division 1.1

Division 1.1: Substances and articles with a mass explosion hazard.

Division 1.2

Division 1.2: Substances and articles with a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard.

Division 1.3

Division 1.3: Substances and articles with a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or projection hazard, but not a mass explosion hazard.

Division 1.4

Division 1.4: Substances and articles that present no significant hazard.

Division 1.5

Division 1.5: Very insensitive substances with a mass explosion hazard.

Division 1.6

Division 1.6: Extremely insensitive articles without a mass explosion hazard. There are also twenty compatibility groups designated by a capital letter. These substances are identified by Class 1 labels and Class 1 designation in Safety Data Sheets.

Business owners managing explosives need to be aware of the risks and take all necessary precautions.
